2011 dc zinefest update

Just wanted to post some pics from the DC Zinefest yesterday. Despite the crazy heat, lots of people showed up to St. Stephen's Church to check it out. I really had a blast, despite getting pretty hungry and hot by the final hour. That said, I want to thank everyone once again, who stopped by and took some time out to chat and buy some of my work. More than anything, the kind words from folks made my day. I was fortunate to share a table with my friend Matt Dembicki and his son Adam, who is an awesome young artist like his dad. As you can see from the photo above and a couple directly below, we worked on a wicked cool Splotch Monster collaboration! I made sure to buy two of Adam's latest comic books, which you can find out about more HERE, at his dad's blog. One can always count on Matt to do a thorough job covering these events.  I also posted some pics from the Splotch Monster workshop during the fest. It was truly great seeing adults of all ages getting into their work and having fun making their own monsters! Everyone was so kind and positive at the workshop and fest, I wish I had more time to talk with people Saturday. Anyhow, looking forward to next year's event in the meantime!

artist of the week: gary rudinsky

The artist of the week at Go Flying Turtle is my friend Gary Rudinsky. If you've read this blog in recent past, you may have read about Gary's music gigs at King Street Coffee in Leesburg, VA. Well, not only can can Gary play music, but he can draw. I mean he can REALLY DRAW! This month you'll find Gary's drawings on display at King Street Coffee as well. They're from his book "Once Before There Was A Upon A Time", and they're pretty incredible. I've got a copy of the book myself and have always marveled at the intricacy and detail in his work, as well as the imagination. Please, if you're in the area, drop on by, grab a drink (their iced Moroccan mint tea is perfect for these hot summer days) and see Gary's work in person.

another merry monster medley

Here's one more Splotch Monster medley, as I like to call the ones where I do a bunch on one page, rather than the typical one per day. I made both yesterday's and today's while watching Miyazaki's "Spirited Away" with my Manga and cartooning classes. Much like George Lucas' creatures from the Star Wars series, Miyazaki's films know no boundaries when it comes to character design and visual concepts. Both Lucas and Miyazaki influence my Splotch Monsters, as well as other art I do. Still, I credit drawing from nature and wildlife just as much when it comes to making Splotch Monsters, which I know was certainly a huge influence on both Miyazaki and Lucas.

In the meantime, I can't believe the two weeks I've had with my middle and high school summer art students are over already! Tomorrow we have our big art show and performances then I'll have officially completed my tenth year with the program. I find the kids can have an influence on me as well, when it comes to art-making, with their energy, sense of humor, ideas and unfiltered creativity. I really feel like this was one of the best summers I've had in the program and I'm really going to miss this group from 2011. Last year, for the most part, that wasn't really the case, because I had quite a few bad apples who really shouldn't have been enrolled. Sometimes, it can only take a few to ruin it, and as much as I tried every approach with them, it came down to their own personal attitudes in the end. I hope they found something else - some activity that better suited their needs this summer. In the meantime, I actually can't wait to do this all again next summer.

scenes from summer

Just got back from Pittsburgh where we spent some time with friends and family and watched the greatest fire works show of all time, courtesy of my uncle. It's been a hot one both in PA and here in Leesburg, but that's summer for you. I thought I'd share some Instagram shots taken during the past week. Stay cool in the meantime.

june splotch monsters/pixo collabs

Above are some collaborations with artist Pixo from June. It's been a while since Pixo used my Splotch Forms to make some fantastic new works. Pixo is one of the most creative and prolific artists around, but I know very little about the person, which is part of the beauty of the internet - you can remain as anonymous or as open-booked as you wish, and there's something very ego-less about what Pixo does, which adds to the appeal of the work I believe. You can find many more of our growing universe of creative collaborations at Pixohammer's "Wanderland" site, in the meantime.
