Yesterday, Kris and I dropped by the newly installed sculpture garden at Raflo Park, in Leesburg, VA. I've always loved this park, as I would pass it for years, when walking throughout the town of Leesburg, during the decade that I've lived there. A lot has changed since moving from Leesburg to Sterling, in only a few years, as new development continues to overtake much of the area. While the peace and quiet I've always associated with Raflo Park has been replaced by expensive condos (right across the street), the plus side is the addition of new public art. The five sculptures, chosen from three local artists, compliment Raflo Park and coexist with the natural surroundings perfectly. It reminds me a little of a miniature version of New York state's amazing Storm King sculpture park, even. As part of the Art sPARKs program, the installation of these sculptures is an excellent way to promote local art and bring the work of local talent further into the public eye.
